Be A Good Role Model

The old adage "monkey see, monkey do" may have been invented to describe the relationship between lower primates and their trainers, but it's just as applicable to our own children and their tendency toward mimicry. You'll see it used in a variety of parenting books and Toronto blogs. Why? Because unless you're aware of what you're doing, you could unconsciously be undermining yourself in what you're teaching your children. Here's some advice on how to be a good role model.

Be Courteous

You'd be amazed at what a long way a simple "please" and "thank you" can go, even just getting out of Toronto taxis. Do it as a matter of course and the repetition will sink in. Not only will your kids see and learn that this is the way to treat others, you'll find that store clerks, taxi drivers, police officers, and other people you come across in your daily life will be much more keen to help you - all because of those three little words!

Be Clean

"Brush your teeth!” "Wash your face!" "Tidy your room!" These are three of the most commonly used and oft repeated orders from parents to kids. You can continue to shout and nag three, four, or even five times for every ablution, or you can set the example for your kids by always brushing your teeth, washing your face, and tidying your own bedroom in full view of the kids. We know your real estate training means you don't go to bed at the same time as your kids, but that doesn't mean you can't brush together when it's time for their bedtime.

Be Active

Obesity is one of the leading health concerns in Canada and each ounce of early prevention is a pound of cure. If you've got a child addicted to a video game console, you may be at a loss as to how to get them to exercise. Ordering them to do so only works on some kids, so why not try letting them see you exercise or exercise together? Take a walk to the office where you make your house plans, follow along to an aerobics tape together, or sign up for joint swimming lessons. You'll be amazed at how quickly their attitudes will turn.

Be Responsible

Chores. We all did them and we all want our kids to do them. But how do we get them to stop moaning and start working? Easy. In addition to the chores you set out for them, make sure you and your partner also have a list of jobs. Gatineau parents won't be taken for granted once it's down on paper how much they're looking after on the family's behalf.
